SECOND SPELL RECOVERY

ZINGARI BEATS UNIVERSITY B

Zingari-Richmond defeated University B at Tahuna Park by 22 points (five tries, two converted, and a penalty goal) to 9 points (three tries) in a game wnich £t no stage reached a high standard, there being far too much mishandling by the backs and indiscriminate kicking by the forwards. In the first spell the Light Blue forwards, playing well in the loose, harassed the opposing vanguard, and scored two fir.e tries, while Zingcn’s only points came from a penalty goal kicked by R. Orr. The second half opened at a fast pace and the Zlngari forwards, playing up to their best form, hooked the ball from nearly every set scrum, and the backs linked up in some fine passing movements which had the students on the defensive for the greater part of the spell except for a belated rally by the Light Blues which ended in H. Maisey scoring at the corner. Zingari scored five tries, two of which were converted. The Zingari backs were well served by T. Moore, who showed judgment in switching play back to his forwards when his backs were crowded near the side line. E. Watson and A. Phillips showed up in some excellent passing movements, while R. Orr gave another fine display, his long, raking kicks to touch and his ability to join in passing rushes, one of which resulted in his scoring a fine try, being a feature of the game. All of the forwards played well in the second half, A. E. Hellyer, J. McConnochie. and W. Brown being a hard-working trio. The University B backs lacked combination and played more as individuals, although J. Kearney, who was a tower of strength on defence, attempted to straighten up the attack and used the short punt to the gap on several occasions. R. Wightman, H. Maisey, and G. Mills were the best of the others. The forwards lacked cohesion, and were outplayed, especially in the second half, by their more experienced opponents, the best of a beaten pack being H. Burry, W. Ewing, and p. Ludbrook. Zingari s tries were scored by Phillips (2), A. Watson, Hellyer. and Orr. Orr converted two tries and kicked a penalty goal. For University, B. Burry, E. Hart, and Maisey scored tries. Mr A. Halligan was the referee.
