New Zealand Team Loses Athletics Test Against Australian Universities

New Zealand Press Association—Copyright

Rec. 8 p.m. SYDNEY, May 29. In the Athletics Test at Sydney University Oval the combined Australian Universities beat New Zealand Universities by 22 points to 17. The New Zealand performances were excellent considering that the team arrived in Sydney only last Tuesday.

Conditions were adverse. A strong wind blew directly along the sprint and hurdles track. The distance runners caught it particularly along the back stretch of the 440 Yards course. John Treloar put up what was described as a terrific run to win the 100 Yards event from the New Zealander, D. R. Batten, in lOsec—a performance which experts say was equal to 9.7 sec at least in normal conditions. The two ran together for the first 50 yards, but then the New Zealander dropped back in spite of a spurt near the finish. The margin was three yards. In the Mile Relay there was a halfhearted demonstration against J. Grierson when the New Zealander appeared to shoulder H. Royal. Officials say. however, that any fault was Royal’s for moving over in the lane. New Zealand won the Relay, Other New Zealand successes were the 440 Yards, the High Jump, and the Hop, Step and Jump. Batten ran well to take the 440 Yards event without trouble despite the wind. J. H. Borland was untroubled to win the High Jump. C. Kay was unlucky not to do better than second ;n the Broad Jump, but made no mistake in the Hop, Step and Jump. Detailed results are:— 880 Yards.—U.
