ARM AMPUTATED
SEQUEL TO LEVEL-CROSSING ACCIDENT
PA WELLINGTON. May 29. A young man had his left arm amputated at the Wellington Public Hospital on Saturday night following a level crossing smash at PaekakariKi. He is Douglas Caldwell, a carrier, aged about 23 years, of Beach road, Paraparaumu. The accident occurred at 6.6 p.m. on Saturday. Caldwell was a passenger in a truck being driven over the Paekakariki railway crossing from west to east by another young man. Melvin Howell, also of Paraparaumu. A passenger train, bound for Wellington from Palmerston North, which had just pulled out from the Paekakariki railway station, about 100 yards away, struck the truck, brushing it off the track and damaging it considerably. Howell was uninjured, but his passenger was thrown out of the truck and the train ran over his arm. His condition last night was reported to be satisfactory.
