RECORD EASILY Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH. May 29. Light drizzling showers of rain made conditions somewhat unpleasant for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting, but it was not till the last race that the track became affected. There was an inquiry after the Addington Handicap, in which Kiatoa lost his driver, and K. E. Tarrant, the driver of Probable, was fined £lO for careless driving. Ipso Facto broke in the Ellesmere Handicap, bringing First Lord and Lucky Meg down. An inquiry showed that no blame was attachable to any driver. Winter Handicap Commander Scott had the Winter Handicap, the chief race of the day, in safe keeping a long way from home. National Velvet led out from Right Royal, but Baby Grand headed this pair at the end of half a mile, where the favourite, Gough’s Pride was fifth, with Copper Trail and Prince Hall further back. Commander Scott moved up, and starting the last lap he was handy to Baby Grand; with Good Review almost on terms. Commander Scott drew clear three furlongs from home, and after that the result always looked beyond doubt. Gough’s Pride was second to the straight, but had no chance with the leader. Prince Hall. Checkmate, and Copper Trail came home well to head the others Brilliant Youngster Young Charles outclassed the other two-year-olds in the Juvenile Handicap. Chief Eagle was soon in front, with Lindy Lou handy and these two were showing the way at the end of half a mile, with Our Ida and Green Spear heading the others in close order. Morano was handy just in front of Young Charles. The two pacemakers were out clear three furlongs from home, where Young Charles started a brilliant run which landed him alongside the two leaders at the home turn, after Which he jogged home an easy winner. Casaeando made a late dash to beat Chief Eagle for second, with Anitra and Yankiwi close up. Morano failed to run on. The winner’s time was a two-year-old record, being 3 l-ssec better than the record of Tradition. It was a brilliant performance, stamping Young Charles as an outstanding juvenile. Favourite’s Easy Win Vinceremo, the win favourite, led all the way and won the Addington Handicap very easily from Casameter. who took second place soon after the start. The winner was bred and is owned, trained, and driven by D. Teahen. who raced the mare’s sire, Certissimus, in his successful career as a trotter. Peninsula Handicap Best Globe led for six furlongs in the Peninsula Handicap, but Te Arawhata then took charge to be joined by Tautuku starting the last round. Tautuku faded in the last two furlongs, and Jack Peterson made a late run to score narrowly, while Lady Mavoumeen came from well back for third, with Keymaster and Uranium next. Ellesmere Handicap Flinders Bar set out to win the Ellesmere Handicap from end to end. Merrymaker, Awadale, and Waroonga followed him early, while Belle Potts was handy

after seven furlongs. Flinders Bar was well clear at the entrance to the straight, but Courageous then put in a strong run and beat the pacemaker by a length. Sirocco and his stable-mate. Coliseum, came home fast to head Awadale near the post. Hambletdbian Handicap Loyal Flier and Bingen Dale were in front early in the Hambletonian Handicap, while David Dryden, Swanee Rivei\ and Believe Me were handy starting the last round. Believe Me led Swanee River and Loyal Flier to the straight, and Believe Me just stalled off Loyal Flier, with David Dryden beating the fast-finishing Suzerain narrowly.. Swanee River tired. Fendalton Handicap Fillmore and Worthy Dick were in front in the Fendalton Handicap till two furlongs from home, where Worthy Dick broke Palava then moved up, taking the lead when the straight was reached and stalling off a late challenge from British Machine, who beat Fillmore in the last stride. Gay Note, after being in the middle of the field for a long way, stayed on to beat Loyal Chief for fourth. Final Handicap Loyal Nelson led for three furlongs in the Final Handicap, when Direct Heir headed him, with Seacraft handy. Seacraft headed Direct Heir at the home turn and drew out for an easy win. Black Machine finished well to beat Direct Heir, Wayfarer, and Loyal Nelson.
