1950 AS HOLY YEAR
PROCLAMATION BY POPE VATICAN CITY, Rec. 8 pm. , May 26 Pope Pius XII to-day proclaimed 1050 a holy year. The proclamation was read in the Pope’s throne room in the presence of assembled Vatican donatories. , , • . „ In a brief introductory talk before reading the Bill containing the proclamation the Pope . gave thanks to divine Providence for ‘ some betterment ” in general after the war and the troubled post-war period which had made it possible to celebrate the holy year. The holy year will begin on Christmas Eve. 1949, with the opening of the holy door of St. Stephen’s, .and end with its closing on Christmas Eve. 19 The first holy year was celebrated in 1300 and since 1475 they have been hpld* every 25 years. The official account of the last one said that Russia was the only tory not' represented and added: “It is the wish of God that m the_ next holv year the sons of Russia will also be present at this-great celebration of the Catholic family.
