Derby Winner Will Be Suited By Conditions For Birthday Handicap

SPORTING

Although the handicaps for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next Saturday have not yet been declared, St. Bruno is is being selected as favourite for the principal flat race, the Birthday Handicap.

The Salmagundi three-year-old began the season by winning the first division of the Cashmere Plate at the CJC Grand National meeting and his next placing was a second to Orthodox in the Pioneer Hack Handicap at the Otago Hunt Club meeting. After an unplaced performance he had three wins in a row—the Dunedin Guineas, the Flying Handicap at Gore, and the President’s Handicap, of one mile and a-quarter, also at Gore. He finished last in the Southland Handicap, but a week later he had the greatest triumph of his career so far by winning the New Zealand Derby easily from Hasty Glance and Tauloch. The conditions were to his liking.

Three unplaced performances followed and then came wjns in the Otautau Cup and the Riverton. Cup, in which he led over the last two furlongs and won by three lengths. St. Bruno is from the Philamor mare Philaster, the dam of Listen In, and he was bred by his owner Dr A. A. Reid. He will probably have conditions to suit him next Saturday and if he goes to the post it is almost certain that he will hold pride of place on' the totalisator.
