Entries Reveal Support Accorded Winter Show

Although there are decreases in some sections compared with last year, entries generally are excellent for the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society's forthcoming Winter Show to be held in Dunedin from June 3to 8. Entries closed last week and the task of classifying them was completed yesterday, when the secretary of the Society, Mr R. D. Stewart, supplied the official figures to the Daily Times.

Details of the entries, with those of last year for comparison, are:—

Total 2522 2101 Generally, the support accorded this year’s classes falls little short of that attracted by the 1948 Winter Show which was a centennial year event. New sections this year which have received strong support are those for hospital patients’ handiwork, and also those for hams and bacons which have been reinstated after the war-time rationing period. Entries in the preserves section have been limited tnis year to one by each exhibitor in each class Previously, many exhibitors .frequently showed several entries m one class and often one exhibitor took all the prizes. This will not now be possible, and, although the new rule has reduced the total of entries, it has encouraged a greater number of exhibitors. „ , .. ~ A new class in the fruit section is for the - best decorated basket of Otago-grown fruit and six entries have been received. This class will lend added interest to a fruit section that has become one of the features of the ■ The photography section has further increased its popularity this year and entries have been received from Austr Arrangements have been made for the repfica exhibition of the Tower of London and the Crown Jewels to be on display at the Winter Show. The show; which will be held in the Brydone Hall, Crawford street, will be officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Cullen, on the after noon of June 3.
