TAIERI BORE

INCREASE IN DEPTH FURTHER STEPS PROPOSED The artesian bore at the Taieri, sunk to augment Dunedin’s water supply, has been carried from a depth of 175 feet to 320 feet below ground level. The cleaning, out to this depth of the gravel and silt layers around the Sotted bore pipe has also been carried out. A report to this effect will be presented by the Works Committee to the meeting of the City Council on Monday night. No tests on the water flow available from the deepest bore can be carried out until the arrival of the deep well pump and other equipment on order from England. This is expected to arrive here in October or November. A rising main, 152- chains in length, will be required to convey the water for the bore to the Silverstream race. The report adds that normally this main' would not be laid until the tests of the water were completed. The committee, however, recommends that authority should be giveri for the laying of the main prior to the tests to avoid delay in completing the work and in making the water available for use. The committee points out that the pipes required are in stock, but, owing to a shortage of labour, it recommends that tenders should be invited for laying them. Gas Works .Locomotive A diesel locomotive to replace the: present steam locomotive at the city gasworks was shipped from England by the Tropic,' which is expected to arrive jfin New Zealand about the middle of next month. The present locomotive, which is about 75 years old, is to be sold. View Street Crossing Instructions have been given to the city engineer, “Mr S. G. Secular, to arrange for regular maintenance to be given to the pedestrian crossing in Moray place at View street, and to have a length of half a chain in View street from this intersection sealed during the next tar-sealing season. King Street Bridge A white strip, 18 inches wide, is to be painted on the stonework at the ends of the King street bridge and along the stone balustrade on- the upstream side. The face of the concrete kerb at the northern, approach to the bridge is also to be painted. The Works Committee reports .that this work is designed to minimise the danger to traffic at the bridge, and when it is done, consideration will be given to any necessary improvement to the street fighting in this locality The committee also reports that the elimination of the footway at the side of the bridge to increase the carriageway was considered, but was regarded as impracticable, as the footway was supported only by a light steel truss, and was too fight to be used by vehicular traffic. Making of Concrete Poles The Electricity Committee reports that the department’s store in Ward street is now nearing completion, and authority has been granted to proceed with the preliminary steps in the calling of tenders for the erection of a building for making concrete power poles. The committee also reports that the Ward street steam plant was started up when the generator at Waitaki failed. The plant is working two shifts a day from Monday to Friday. ,
