COMING AIR RACE
Fast Times Thought Likely Britain to New Zealand In a Day The pre-war England to s Australia Air Race will be an affair of tortoises compared with the Canterbury Centennial Air Race. This w as inferred by Mr I. H. Penrose at the annual meeting of the Otago Aero Club last evening when he said that he had had information to the effect that the first plane in the fastest category was fully expected to land in New Zealand within 24 hours-of leaving Britain. The Government was taking a practical interest in the race, said Mr Penrose, and reports from overseas indicates that it had aroused keen interest in America as well as in Britain and on the Continent. Approval had been given to the use of solid fuel, but there would certainly be no approval given to any suggestions pf pilotless planes being used —a possibility well within the bounds of feasibility.
car dealers considered it an .easy matter to circumvent the price order “It is expressly laid down,” said the tribunal’s spokesman, “ that any person commits an offence who is a party to any device, plan or scheme to circumvent the order. The statement that dealers could find many loopholes can only be regarded as wishful thinking of some person for whom the laws of the land exist only to be broken. Moreover, it might even persuade honest people into a dangerous position.” The legislation, he added, was not so loosely drafted that such devices as “ a friendly bet with the salesman,” or the' sale of a worthless article at a heavy price in addition to the motor car deal could turn an illegal transaction into a legitimate one.
