RAILCAR ORDER
WAIRARAPA LINE SPECIALLY DESIGNED UNITS PA WELLINGTON, May 26. Railway passenger services on the Wellington-Wairarapa route are to be improved in approximately two years’ time by the installation of twin-unit railcars, which will replace the railcars at present operating on this service The Minister of Railways, Mr Semple, announced that tenders are to be called in Britain for the construction of 10 twin-unit railcars to replace the six “ Maahunui ” type > ailcars built especially for the Wairarapa service in 1936. Because of the particularly difficult operating conditions on the Wairarapa route, the new railcars had been specially designed to enable them to work over the Rimutaka incline, but they will, if required, be quite suitable for use on other sections of the railway.
