PROM THE FILES OF TH* ©taflo Bail? {Times DUNEDIN, May 27, 1864. At Tokomairiro great exertions are being made to establish a public market- for the district and in furtherance of the project a public meeting was held in the schoolhouse on Saturday last. Mr A. Jones was in the chair, and after some deliberation it was concluded that the only means of accomplishing the purpose was through the formation of a joint stock company. A resolution was passed that a company shoul(f be formed, the capital to be raised in 100 shares of £5 each, and a committee was appointed for enrolling shareholders and making the necessary arrangements.
From a letter to the editor.—“l consider that the principle of supplying water to this city by means of pri- ' vate enterprise is highly inexpedient, ' setting aside any plea of injustice. It . ought to be the duty of the State, or Vat least the Municipality, of each town, ■.to furnish that indispensable element —water —to a pent-up copulation on a large scale. Nor, considering the phy- ' sical capabilities of this country does any method of supplying Dunedin on a large scale appear difficult of accomplishment, Dunedin being situated -so low that the streams of the sur- • ‘rounding country could be directed towards this city with the greatest ease. When we reflect on the growing importance of Dunedin, and the natural • facilities we have to . obtain a splendid ■“'supply of pure water, it goes far to • 'prove that we are behind the age.—l ' am, etc.. Fredrick Bower.”
