JUVENILE HANDICAP

An Interesting Clash Expected The clash between Young Charles and Morano in the Juvenile Handicap at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow should provide one of the highlights of the day. When they last met, in the Juvenile Stakes at the Oamaru meeting, Young Charles recorded a ridiculously easy victory over Burns Night, Preston and Morano, winning with his ears pricked by about six lengths. Morano would probably have made Young Charles’s task more, difficult had he not broken just after the start and lost the best part of 96 yards. He put in a solid run over the last half mile to finish a useful fourth. Even if he had not broken it is doubtful whether he would have beaten Young Charles, but if he leaves the mark to-morrow he will have a chance to prove his worth. Burns Night, who will receive 24 yards from Morano and Young Charles, has had three seconds in his three starts and is due for a change of fortune. Van Diemen is a speedy youngster, and with Preston, Gay Heritage, Farlena and Yankiwi engaged a firstclass contest should result. Young Charles, Morano and Burns Night will be among those well supported. Jottings Handicaps for the Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting will be declared to-mor-row night and withdrawals are due on Monday. Aqua Lady hao had a second, third and fourth at her last three starts and she may return to the winning list in the Ellerslie Handicap at Addington. Pretty Dillon has shown improved form in the last few weeks and she deserves a winning turn. She has had three minor placings on the South Canterbury circuit and is handily placed off the front in the Winchester Trot at Washdyke to-morrow. Stallion Sold for 30s. Royal Silk, a high-class pacer in his day, but who was not a success as a sire, changed hands at a Gore horse sale recently at 30s. Royal Silk, who was foaled in 1926, has left nothing of note, the best of his progeny racing at present probably being Fabric Silk, winner of four races this season. Addington Prospect Tutta Bella, who was an expensive failure at the Oamaru meeting in the McDowell Memorial, won by Gay Note, may add interest to the finish of the Ellesmere Handicap at the Canterbury Park meeting. The full sister to Esto Fidelis a recent winner at Forbury Park, has more than average ability, and she would only need to strike her gait quickly to race prominently. Coquette Dead *•

Coquette, the dam of Morano, died last week. A brilliant mare, Coquette reached New Zealand Cup company, and she seemed destined to make a name for herself at the stud. She was in foal to U. Scott when she died. She was by Grattan Loyal from Bonny Logan, the dam of Gaillard, Bayard, Safety Pin, Captain Morant, Bonny Bridge, and Admiration. Coquette was the dam of Vigilant, winner of me Oamaru Juvenile Stakes last season. Remarkable Performance

Single Task was backed in the Members’ Handicap at Epsom last Saturday as though • she was unbeatable. She finished third putting up a performance that was nothing short of remarkable. She went away safely, but after two furlongs broke so badly that R. Young had to stop her almost to a walk to bring her back to her gait. When she did get going again she was standing the leaders upwards of a furlong. Her effort to get third spoke for itself. Her race at Epsom was her last for the season. She should reach the tightest classes next season.
