WAITAKI GENERATOR REPAIRS WILL TAKE ALMOST FULL MONTH
PA
CHRISTCHURCH, May 16
Some 28 or 30 days will be needed before the damaged generator at Waitaki Power House can be repaired and put back into running order. Until it is repaired, voluntary restrictions on the use of peak-load power in the South Island must be maintained.
This information was given from the power house this evening by Mr W. H. Gregory, district engineer of the State Hydro-electric Department. Mr Gregory is visiting Waitaki to see for himself the damage to the 15,000-kilowatt generator.
One of five at the station, the generator was a three-phase unit and each of the three windings had been affected and would require attention, said Mr Gregory. The staff at the powerhouse was working extremely hard on the job. Mr E. E. James, assistant district engineer, said to-day that the response by the public to the appeal to save power over the peak period had been good.
