SUCCESS OF OAMARU TRAINER AT EPSOM

The Bain-Bryce combination, which has a great record in major trotting events this season, was again to the fore at Epsom on Saturday, when Prince Hall won the Adams Memorial Handicap, the principal event on the card, and Battle On was successful in the Papakura HanColiseum, a useful Improver front Bain’s stable, ran third to Red Arrow and Glengarry in the Cornwall Handicap. Bain has also had great success with Captain Sandy, winner of more than £IO,OOO in stakes this season, and Sand Piper, who has won two races in the past two months. Prince Hall was having his first start front Bain’s stable on Saturday, and as the dead track was to his liking he made no race of the Adams Memorial. Prince Hall had three wins when trained at Mataura by D. Todd earlier in the season. He won the Southland Handicap on October 30, going on to win the Manchester Handicap on the fourth day of the New Zealand Cup meeting. His next success was in the Prebbleton Handicap at the Canterbury Park meeting in January. He was then taken over by R. J. Berry, but in five starts from his stables he failed to get in the money. If the tracks remain soft Prince Hall should win again for Bain. Battle On has usually been regarded as a “ fine weather ” horse, but on Saturday he had no difficulty in winning his race on a slow track He is one of the most 1 capable sprinters in his class, and he should be hard to beat if started again next Saturday. Coliseum worked well before the meeting, and he may make amends for his third placing oh Saturday. Another recent addition to Bain’s team, Fillmore, ran unplaced in the Marconi Handicap, won by Beckieigh. Fillmore is improving with every race, and should soon return to the winning list under Bain’s guidance.

Jottings Nominations for the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on May'2B are due to-day.

Nominations for the Ashburton Trotting Club’s two-day meeting next month are due to-day. South Island horses recorded five wins and 11 minor plaeings at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday.

Sandy Ridge has had four wins and a second in five starts under saddle in the past few months. The Sandydale gelding is one of the best saddle horses produced in Southland in recent years. Single Task in Form

Single Task followed up her win on the first day of the Forbur.v Park meeting with a useful second to Morning Wings over two miles at Epsom. The Bill B. mare looks like reaching a tight mark among the straight-out trotters.

By Light Brigade Courtesy, winner of the Winter Handicap at Auckland on Saturday, is a five-year-old by Light Brigade from Our Triumph, by The Triumph from Lady John, by Advance from a Rothschild mare. Our Triumph was bred by W. Doyle, of Doyleston. Courtesy, who is a half-brother to Pampero, Our Parade, and Swingalong, has a record of two wins and four plaeings in 18 starts this season, and she is trained by D. T. Nyhan at 'Ashhurst. Promising Pacer

Foreign Lady should develop into a good winner for the Washdyke trainer, P. P. Gallagher, next season. She recorded a third and a fourth in her two starts at Epsom on Saturday, bringing her record for the season to four wins and six placings in 21 starts. She has shown that she can run out a solid two miles, and it is over this distance that she can be expected to snine.

Third Success Sierra Sue recorded her third success this season when she won the second division of the Otautau Harness Trot at the Birchwood Hunt meeting on Saturday. She was very unreliable last season and at the beginning of the present term, but she has settled down for J. Walsh, and should more than pay her way next season. She is a five-year-old mare by U. Scott from Moko Child,' a mare not in the Stud Book. Likely Favourite

The U. Scott colt Lochinvar won so well at the Waimate Racing Club’s meeting last month that he is sure to be one of the favourites for the Beaconsfield Trot at the South Canterbury meeting. By Red Shadow

Red Arrow recorded his first success for the season when he won the Cornwall Handicap by a nose from the South Islandtrained Glengarry at Auckland. He is a five-year-old gelding by the New Zealand Cup winner Red Shadow from Pamelus, by Jack Potts from Amy Audubon, by Great Audubon from Amy Dillon, by Harold Dillon. Red Arrow ranks as a half-brother to a useful performer this season in Grand Scott. Red Arrow is trained by his owner and breeder, D. Bennett at Templeton. He has the credentials to develop into a good winner.
