SECRET NEW WEAPONS
TESTS IN AUSTRALIA * TYPES OF GUIDED MISSILES NZPA—Copyright Rec. 11 p.m. CANBERRA, May 14. Secret new weapons for use in naval, air and land warfare are now being tested on the rocket range in South Australia. They include many types of guided missiles, anti-sub-marine devices and new explosives. One list states that the weapons being tested include: First, rocket bombs designed to take atomic warheads; secondly, jet-propelled, radiocontrolled flying-wing bombs; thirdly, homing bombs which follow a moving target: fourthly, a revolutionary jet aircraft which is believed to be faster than sound; fifthly, new types of glider aircraft, including “ tadpole wing ” designs; sixthly, direction-finding beams operated from aircraft and designed to help in locating and following submarines; seventhly, anti-tank weapons which can destroy the largest tank now in existence; eighthly, an explosive variant of cordite, invented by Australians and manufactured from Australian timber.
