Atlantic Treaty Arms May be Used to Fight Internal Communism
New Zealand Press Association—Copyright Rec. 9 p.m. WASHINGTON, May 14. American arms to back North Atlantic Treaty could be used to fight internal Communist revolutions in signatory countries, the- State Department said to-day in a policy statement. The statement was issued to prepare the ground for the 1,450,000,000-dollar arms the next financial year which President Truman will soon submit to Congress. It declared that the United States must bolster not only Western Europe but Greece, Turkey, and “ certain other nations whose security is important to the United States.” The Admingtration purposes to use 1,100,000,000 dollars of the arms programme for Western Europe, 250,000,000 dollars for Greece and Turkey, and earmark 100,000,000 dollars as a contingency fund for use elsewhere as the need arises.
