Another Major Scheme For South Island
PA NELSON, May 14. Preparations are goirig ahead for the establishment of a major hydroelectric station in the Mangles RiverTutaki area, which will be about twice the size of Arapuni. In this project it is proposed to use Lake Rotoroa’s natural storage with a tunnel through to the Mangles River, which flows into the Buller a few miles from Murchison. Replying to a question at the annual meeting of the Nelson-Marlbop-ough-West Coast League of Local Bodies, Mr R. S. S. Meredith, resident engineer in Nelson for the State Hydro-electric Department, said that preliminary work was going ahead, aerial surveys were being made, some on high priority, and general hydrographic studies were in hand. “ This is really a tremendous scheme, a national scheme, and is actually of more interest to the rest of the South Island than it is. to the areas around Nelson, said Mr Meredith. “It is in the region of twice the size of Arapuni, which is a really big job.”
