TWO SURVIVORS
BOMBED TANKER HARPA , V ONE VISITING DUNEDIN The second engineer of the tanker Neritopsis, Mr R. Yewdall, is one of the two survivors of the motor vessel Harpa, which was sunk by Japanese planes on the day on which Singapore •fell. The Harpa, a small tanker, which was the last vessel to leave Singapore before that city fell to the Japanese, was carrying a shipment of aviation spirit, when she was bombed by enemy planes. Fire swept through the ship and of the crew of 40 only two were saved, Mr Yewdall being one of them. They were picked up by British naval craft close to the scene of the tragedy, after about 20 minutes in the burning sea. Mr Yewdall was reticent about his injuries, but admitted that he was “ burnt a bit.”
