UNION OVERWHELMED

PIRATES’ EASY VICTORY

Although outclassed by Pirates, Union fought hard till the final whistle in the match at the North Ground. Tile final score was Pirates 32, Union 3. The Pirates backs varied their attack cleverly and they were quick to seize on any mistakes made by the opposing team. W. Perriam, at second five-eighth, and C. J. McDonald, at centre, for Pirates, combined well, showing initiative and judgment, while W. Callon, the Pirates wing three-quarter, ran with determination. The Union backs were content to play a defensive game, but on the occasions when they gained possession they lacked the thrust necessary to pierce the* Pirates defence. The packs were evenly matched but it was usually the Pirates half-back who received the ball. J. Welsh and J McCrorie were prominent in the Union pack, as were E. R. Saunders and J. C. Pilling for Pirates. Tries were scored for Pirates by C. J. McDonald (4), W Callon (2), R. Bell and H Skinner and tries were converted by D R. Sapsford (2), Bell and Perriam. Union’s points were gained from a penalty kick by W. Trevathan. OTHER CENTRES Invercargill Collegiate 6. Old Boys 3; Bluff 22, Star 3: Marist 36, Waikiwi 6; Pirates 22, Invercargill 6.
