SCRAPPY GAME

ZINGARI BEATS KAIKORAI Zingari-Richmond defeated Kaikorai by 14 points to 3 in the second match at Carisbrook, a good deal of scrappy play being relieved by occasional bright back movements and by the stronger resistance offered by Kaikorai in the second half, which revived the waning interest of the crowd of about 3000 spectators. With its forwards gaining a much larger share of the ball from scrums and line outs, however, Zingari always looked like the winning team, and although there was still a lack of finish to much of the passing, the backs showed more edge in attack than in the previous game. The Zingari full-back, R. Orr, gave another fine display, and frequently repelled the Kaikorai forwards with long, raking kicks to touch, his fielding in the air and on the ground being beyond reproach. Behind the hard-working Zingari pack, T. Moore gave a first-class exhibition, and showed judgment in switching the play back to his forwards. He combined effectively on a number of occasions in sharp breaks from the scrum with A. E. Hellyer and S. Dowland. E. Watson shaped well at centre, and A. Watson, who made some strong runs on the wine, was always looking for work. A. E. Hellyer played an excellent game in the Zingari forwards, who packed much more effectively than their opponents, W. Brown, C. M. Garden (until he retired with an injury in the second half), and S. Dowland also being prominent. C. Taylor showed up in some good foot rushes.

The Kaikorai forwards lacked cohesion in the first half, and were lucky to be down only 9—3 at the interval, the small margin of difference being largely due to the excellent defence of R. Waldron, at second five-eighth, and to good saving work by A. H. Sime and R. Thompson. There was, however, too much aimless kicking by the'Kaikorai backs, although an improvement was noticeable in the sceond half. Waldron and R. Jaffray combined in several good movements in the centre, the latter showing considerthrust. Of the Kaikorai forwards, M. Reidy was always a hard worker, and A. J. Murray, L. Marks, and R. McMeekmg played well in the loose. Zingari’s tries were scored by E. Watson (2) and Dowland. R. Orr converted one try and kicked a goal from a penalty from the 25 sideline. For Kaikorai, Waldron kicked a goal from a penalty. .

Mr G McDowall was the referee.
