THIRTY-ONE REMITS

CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE THREE-DAY CONFERENCE CONCLUDED PA AUCKLAND, May 13. The conference of the Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand came to an end to-day after three days’ work. The delegates dealt with 31 remits which ranged in subject from taxation and subsidies to air services and road transport. Some remits, such as that advocating the introduction of compulsory military training, were carried with little or no discussion, but widely diverse opinions were expressed on others, including those on immigration and electricpower supply. Seven remits were discussed this morning, and the conference was addressed by Mr R. Hazzard, Australian trade commissioner in New Zealand. It was decided to hold the 1950 conference in Blenheim. Among the final remits was one emphasising the need for a long-term policy of road construction embodying an axle load of not less than eight tons as an ultimate objective for main and feeder roads. Mr B. Ginger (Wellington) said that in the past 10 years the trend had been to use vehicles of greater carrying capacity That was having a very serious effect on highways. Road operators should have some say in the planning of the roads they were going to use. The remit was carried. In view of the dislocation of business because of the recurrent electricpower shortages, the conference decided to urge the Government to concentrate on the preparation and supervision of long-term plans, including those involving smaller plants.
