LICENCE RETESTING
“ACCIDENT-PRONE” DRIVERS RECOMMENDATION BY SAFETY COUNCIL PA WELLINGTON, May 13. The retesting of " accident-prone ’ drivers is the result of a recommendation from the New Zealand Safety Council to the Commissioner of Transport, said a transport official to-day. He added that .similar tests of persons who had committed offences liable to cause accidents had been carried out by inspectors in an unspectacular fashion since 1940. The present, retesting would take the form of a visit from an inspector who would talk over the incidents with the driver who had committed offences, in an endeavour to find the cause and give guidance. Following the visit the driver might be asked to undergo driving or eyesight tests or examination by a doctor. If the tests were unsatisfactory his licence would be cancelled or suspended. “We have had a staff of inspectors working in Wellington for some years collating and analysing court returns on road regulation Dreaches,” said the official. “Then, as now, a motorist who had his licence cancelled or revoked had the democratic right of appeal to a magistrate.”
