PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE

ARMED POLICE IN DOWNING STREET LONDON, May 12. Police armed with revolvers were on duty in Downing Street to-day guarding the residences of the Prime Minister, Mr Attlee, and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Stafford Cripps. A Scotland Yard spokesman said the police were armed as an extra safety precaution but he would not give any further information. It is understood that it was decided to arm them as a precaution following the high feeling over the Ireland Bill. In Downing Street is is recalled that the campaign of violence in England by members of the Irish Republican Army began early in 1939, arid that by the summer of that year 127 outrages —57 in London and 70 in the provinces —had killed one man and injured 55, and caused great damage. Explosions from bombs' planted in London and th° provinces continued until early in 1940.
