EXTRA-MURAL STUDENTS
MOVE TO SECURE BETTER FACILITIES PA WELLINGTON, May 11. Statements that university lecturers were “ simply not interested ” in extra-mural students and criticism of the facilities provided for them by the university colleges were made at today’s conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute. The conference agreed that the Government should be asked to urge the University of New Zealand to provide adequate facilities for students to do their work extra-murally and obtain an assurance that all except those who were required to take extensive practical or experimental work should be permitted to obtain their degrees without attending classes. To-day’s discussion followed the re- ! cent amendment to the regulations ol the University of New Zealand preventing students after 1951 from obtaining a degree in arts without attending lectures in Stage 111 subjects Several hundred teachers were vitally concerned, and after 1951 there woutd be many more unless there was a change in university policy, it was stated at to-day’s conference. A report on the matter was presented by Mr A. Thompson, convener of a special j executive committee.
