GROUND-NUT SCHEME

BRITISH PLANTINGS IN TANGANYIKA DROUGHT AFFECTS CROP NZPA Special Correspondent Rec. 9 pm. LONDON. May 11. Reports that a drought m Tanganyika had seriously affected this year’s crop from the British Government’s ground-nut scheme were confirmed in the House of Commons by the Minister of Food. Mr John Strachey. Although Mr Strachey gave no precise figures the political correspondent of the Yorkshire Post says that only about 2000 tons of ground nuts and 1000 tons of sunflower seeds will be obtained this year from the plantings. The estimated yield this year was 56,000 tons of ground nuts. It is admitted that even before the drought the scheme was well behind schedule. The original plan called for 600,000 acres to be planted this year, but because of various difficulties only 50,000 acres were in fact cleared and sown.
