REMEMBRANCE DAY

Request to Churches A motion that the Oamaru Ministers’ Association be requested to consider the holding of local church services at 11.15 a.m. on Remembrance Day was carried at the monthly meeting of the Oamaru RSA on Tuesday night. It was pointed out that if this were done a good muster would parade, at the Cenotaph, and there would be large attendances at the churches. Mr I. T. Catto was in the chair, and there were also present Messrs J. M. Macaulay, E. Freeman, B. Allan, J. P. McLeod, E. Cameron, I. W. Oats, J. A. Stenhouse and L. G. Clark. It was decided to forward a letter of Rev. I. G. Ryburn for delivering the address at the Ai.zac Day service. Mr Freeman said the address was one of the most inspiring he had ever heard at an Anzae Day service. Several letters were received from England expressing appreciation to the association for parcels forwarded. The Palmerston Returned Services’ Association extended an invitation to members to take part in a billiard tournament at Palmerston at a later date. The invitation was accepted and it was decided to bring the matter before the notice of members at the annual general meeting later in the month. The Women’s Section invited members and their wives to be present at the branch’s seventh birthday celebrations on May 30. Advice was received from the North Qtago Scottish Society that it could not make its hall available on one Saturday in every year to the association for the holding of the meetings. A deputation comprising Messrs Catto, Zimmermann and the secretary, Mr A. C. Piper, was appointed, to approach the society again. The secretary reported that sales of poppies, with a few country returns still to be forwarded, amounted to £359 5s 2d. It was expected, however, that when the country returns were received the sales would reach last year’s total of £419. Messrs J. T. Burrows and Catto were appointed hospital visitors for the month. Four inward and eight outward transfers were approved. A minute of appreciation of the work done by Messrs Freeman, Allan, Oats and McLeod, who are not seeking re-election to the executive, was placed ofi the books. „ ... The action of Mr A. A. Stock in withdrawing his nomination as a candidate for the executive after he had ascertained that 11 nominations had been received for 10 vacancies, was referred to with appreciation. The secretary reported that Mr Stock’s action would save the association approximately £l4.
