Degrees Conferred at Graduation Ceremony

As the climax of the years of study at the University of Otago, graduands this year were capped at the annual ceremony in the Dunedin Town Hall yesterday afternoon. Degrees as varied as an honorary doctorate in literature and masters of home science were conferred by the Pro-chancellor of the University of New Zealand, Mr L. J. Wild in a ceremony at once dignified and impressive. Gowned graduands filled the main body of the hall while the galleries were crowded with relations, friends and fellow-students. Indicative of the erudition of the wearers, richly-hued cowls and vestments lent colour to the stage, where representatives of the teaching staff and University Council were grouped.

Among the degrees conferred were two honorary doctorates. These were conferred on Lord Beveridge (in absentia), renowned English economist, and Dr Patrick Marshall, formerly professor of geology at the University. The pro-chancellor of the University of New Zealand, Mr L. J. Wild, in conferring an honorary doctorate of science on Dr Marshall, said he confessed to some degree of pride in the duty as 40 years ago he had beeri a student of Dr Marshall’s. Not only was Dr Marshall an eminent teacher but his researches had illumined the whole field of geology. In petrology and petrography he had rapidly gained an international reputation. He had been interested in other branches of the science and in oceanography, the Marshall Line would perpetuate his name as long as there was oceanography. Lord Beveridge, Mr Wild said, was connected with the University of Otago in that he had visited Dunedin last year at the invitation of the University.
