YACHTS AT MACANDREW BAY LIGHT AIRS AFFECT RACING The close of the yachting season on the harbour was celebrated by inter-club trophy races on a windward and leeward course off Macandrew Bay at low and turning tide.

Light airs exasperated the skippers of often becalmed boats; in the X class event, Gallina had a good lead until she reached the clubhouse on the first beat up to Challis’s beacon. The rest of the field caught her here when she lost the breeze and she was not placed at the finish.

The Idlealong craft caught the Takapunas before the second run down to Raynbirds buoy and, again opposite the clubhouse, the whole fleet lost the breeze. As the tide had then turned, several of the boats drifted backwards. Oakie, a Takapuna, led them away on a puff. Lightning was left. The Coombes Memorial Trophy, the first trophy to be presented for competition among the small Primer class yachts on the Otago harbour, was won bv Elf., The skipper was youthful R. Chalmers, of the Vauxhall Club. It was found necessary to award two cups to the winner of one race in the Idlealong and X class events. Elvyna thus won the Hobk and Aulsebrook Cups and Nada won the Strang and Elliot trophies yesterday. Trophies will be presented at a social function later in the year, but the Coombes trophy was presented to its young winner at the conclusion of the race. Results:—
