MAUDEEN AND FANTOM WIN PRINCIPAL EVENTS AT METROPOLITAN TROTS

Special to Daily Time*

CHRISTCHURCH, Apl. 17

Conditions were excellent for the final day of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting, and there was a large attendance to witness some fine racing. The scratching of Highland Fling for the Easter Handicap disappointed many people ;as the champion pacer always arouses interest. He gave himself a knock the previous day and, though the trouble was not regarded as serious, he may now be spelled for the balance of this season. Maudeen, who was second when her stablemate, Lady Averil, won the chief event on the first day, led practically all the way in the Easter Handicap.

Captain Gaillard, Globe Direct and Grattan Drive followed Maudeen early, while Captain Sandy made a forward move at the end of five furlongs, where Black Machine and Congo Song were also prominent. Grattan Drive, Captain Sandy, Black Machine and Globe Direct followed Maudeen to the straight, but Maudeen held her place to win comfortably. Globe Direct made a late dash to head Captain Sandy on the post, with Black Machine and Grattan Drive close up, while Loyal Peter and Lady Averil headed the others. There was .an inquiry after the race into alleged interference by Globe Direct, driven by M. Holmes, with Grattan Drive, driven by R. Young. It was found that in a tight finish Globe Direct came through on opening caused by Grattan Drive, who was tiring, but that no actual interference took place. Fantom In “Blanket” Finish Several horses lost ground at the start of the High-class Trotting Stakes, the favourite, Jason’s Quest, and Jimmy Scott being the worst sufferers. Castigate led early, with Aerial Scott, Fantom, Great Venture and Toushay handy. Castigate broke at the home turn, Toushay and Great Venture leading Fantom to the straight. Great Venture took charge, but Fantom headed him on the post, while Jimmy Dillon, with a late dash, cut the tiring Toushay out of third place. Pardon Me was next. Desworthy Wins Again David Dryden was in front at the end of a furlong in the Spreydon Handicap, but with half a mile gone Desworthy and Golden Amazon headed him, with Morning Wings next. Our Jackie joined the leader starting the last round, but dropped out again along the back, where Belshazzar became prominent. Morning Wings challenged in the straight, but Desworthy stalled him off by half a head. Tatsydale, Big Guy and Swanee River were practically in line for fourth. Decisive Victory

Young Charles took charge half a mile from home, with Burns Night and Preston handy, while Morano and van Dieman were making up ground. Young Charles beat Burns Night decisively, while Morano came home strongly to beat Preston, with van Dieman next. The performances of Morano and van Dieman were very good, in view of the ground lost at the start. Sandpiper’s Great Finish

The Cashmere Handicap, with a field of 24, provided plenty of excitement, with the leading positions changing many times on the journey. On Approval was in front when they settled down, Aspanall. Victory Globe and Zulu being handy after two furlongs, while Zulu was in front at the end of half a mile. Mountmellick then moved up to second, but before reaching the mile post Sea Craft was in charge with Zulu. Then Bull’s Eye dashed up, leading with a lap to go. Whipster, Indianote and Sea Craft heading the others, while Novelda joined in a little further on. Bull’s Eye led to the straight, but just when he looked like winning, the Oamaru mare, Sandpiper, appeared with a great run on the outside, beating Bull’s Eye easily. Indianote made a late dash to beat Novelda and Whinster for third. Zulu. On Approval, Windermere, Indemnity, Remlap, .Starshell and Paddy Potts were concerned in a smash five furlongs from home, and it may have had a serious effect on the result. An inquiry showed that the accident was caused by Mountmellick hanging in on Zulu In a tightly packed field. Zulu struck Mountmellick’s wheel and tangled, causing interference to the other horses concerned. The evidence did not disclose any negligent driving. Battle On Sets Pace The Oamaru gelding. Battle On, tried to lead all the way in the Linwood Handicap, and failed only in the last furlong. Gay Knight and National Velvet followed him most of the way, and GayKnight went on in the straight for a decisive win: Trustee finished on to beat Good Review and Indigo, while the favourite, Gough’s Pride, after losing about 36 yards at the start, was sixth. Easy Win for Lyceum Lyceum, after running second on the first day and failing badly a week later, justified his favouritism in the Liverpool Handicap. He and Red Flight followed Worthy Dick after half a mile, while Fillmore, Palette. Magnificent. Systematic and Despatch were others prominent most of the way. Red Flight dropped put starting the last round and Duncraig moved up along the back following Worthy Dick and Lyceum to the straight.
