Southland Horses to Race at Ricearton
Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, Apl. 17. Excellency, Salmon Spear, Banquet, and Waiau King were taken from Invercargill by float to Ricearton to-day to race at the C.J.C. meeting. Excellency was not produced in the Riverton Cup because of the heavy going, hut Salmon Spear, in making his first appearance for several weeks, ran a promising race, being one of the leaders into the straight. The outing is certain to improve him. Banquet, a three-year-old half-brother by Salmagundi to a useful sprinter in Geisha Girl, won the Trial Handicap at Riverton in easy style. He is down to race on the second and third days at Riccarton. Waiau King will start in the hurdle race on the third day. Several jockeys riding at Riverton on Saturday also returned north at the week-end Among them were C. T. Wilson, L. W. Hare, N. A. Crombie, A. N. Didham, W. D. Skelton, D. Dawson, R J. Hawes and C. M. Cassidy. Cassidy will ride The Grate, The Hob, and Scuttle on the first day. L. W. Hare’s mounts include Frances in the Great Autumn. D. Dawson will ride Grill in the hurdle race, and A. N. Didham will be on All Alone and Fille d’Honneur.
