LAWN TENNIS

CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENT MAJOR UPSET IN WOMEN'S SINGLES Conditions were cold and gusty and showers caused short delays in the play at the Otago Lawn Tennis Championships at Logan Park on Saturday. In spite u£ the unfavourable conditions, however, some excellent and exciting tennis was The major upset of the tournament was the defeat of Miss Mavis Kerr, runner-up in the New Zealand Championship. Her opponent, Miss Margaret Pyle, although a less spectacular player, out-generalled her more experienced opponent and won a deserved victory. It was apparent early in the contest that Miss Pyle intended to match her hard-hitting team mate with steady, determined tennis, a game at which she is adept. Miss Kerr, perhaps as a result of a shaky start, fell into a similar type of game—probably the style which best suited her opponent. The other semi-final resulted in a win for Miss Marion Robertson, who defeated Miss Maud Jolly 6—l, 7—5. After losing the first set easily, Miss Jolly gave one of the best displays of her tennis career, matching Miss Robertson’s fastest drives in pace and direction. This second set was probably the best exhibition of the Men’s Singles semi-finals did not produce the same keen finishes. D. Radford defeated J. C. Robertson 6—4, 6—4, neither player reaching his best form. Both players missed the easiest of kills. Radford won mainly through the fact that he made fewer errors than Robertson. The match between J. Paterson and G. Pearce was never in doubt, Paterson’s ability to cover the court and to retrieve apparent winners made Pearce’s task difficult and his effort in taking Paterson to 6—4 in the first set was a good one. Paterson won by playing all court tennis, bis passing shots being particularly accurate. Pearce exploited the drop-shot and following lob technique with considerable success in the early stages, but later fell into errors in playing the dropshot. , „ , The Men’s and Women’s Singles finals will be played to-day commencing at 1.30 p.m. Results : Men’s Singles Second Round.—C.
