GUIDED MISSILES
LAUNCHING BY AIRCRAFT DEFENCE OF AMERICAN CITIES Rec. 8 p.m. NEW YORK, Apl. 14. Plane-launched guided missiles had reached such a stage of development that they could be used to intercept a bombing raid on any American city. General Joseph McNarney said tonight. He said: “ Having electronically detected the approach of enemy formations, the air force would first despatch high-speed interceptors. Instead of carrying conventional guns, these aircraft would carry missiles which could be launched under their own rocket power at supersonic speeds to a target several miles away. “By means of radar homing devices within the missiles, they would track down the enemy, even in evasive action, and by means of proximity fuses they would be detonated when within lethal range of the enemy.”
