RICCARTON CARNIVAL

Wingatui Bracket Fancied For Great Autumn FALSE STEP IN THE EASTER By the Sporting Editor One of the principal “ doubles ” of the racing season is the Easter and Autumn Handicaps, which will be run at Riccarton on Monday, when the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting will be opened. Wingatui’s sole representative in the Great Easter Handicap will be The Hob, but Frances, The Grate, Speedy, and Fine Night are booked to go to the post for the Great Autumn Handicap and between them they look like getting a share of the stake. Recent winners of the Great Autumn Handicap from Wingatui were First In (1945) and The Joker (1943). Second in importance to only the Easter and Autumn Handicaps is the Champagne Stakes, and in Monday’s race Wingatui has a strong candidate in Western Winner, who came through his final preparation in good style. With such horses as Golden Spa, Super Snipe, and Western Winner engaged, the race will arouse considerable interest. Horses likely to be in favour with the public are :-r----11.17: Kildare Hack Hurdles.—Kiloney, Knight Crusader, Cloister. 11.57: Champagne Stakes.—Golden Spa, Super Snipe, Western Winner. 12.42: Autumn Hack Plate.—Bowling Green, Bar Garrette, Horxnond 1.27: Courtenay Handicap.—Watchword, Oberon, Chord. 2.12: Great Easter Handicap—False Step, Citril, Wild Note. 2.57: Russley Handicap.—Open Range, Stag Dance, Trench Fray. 3.42: Great Autumn Handicap.—Frances-The Grate bracket, Royal Tan, Fine Night.
