LAWN TENNIS

CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING HIGH STANDARD OF PLAY The Otago Lawn Tennis Championships were commenced at Logan Park yesterday in cold but fine weather. Over 150 players are competing in the main events, making approximately 340 entries.

The standard of play was good with many of. the events being evenly contested. There were no surprises in the Men’s Championship Singles, where the top-ranking players of the province fought their way into the third round. J. Paterson, D. Radford and .7. C. Robertson all played well, although Robertson lost a set to the tenacious St. Clair man, R. Bennett. The second round of the Ladies’ Singles Championship was notable for the fact that the leading players were all called upon to extend themselves. The Southlander Miss J. Morton carried the runner-up in the New Zealand Championship, Miss Mavis Kerr to 6—4, 6—4, while another Southland player, Miss M. Lindsay lost her first set by only 9—7 to Miss M. Robertson. Miss M. Jolly causfed a minor upset by defeating‘Mrs C. Gilkison after a long three-set match, in which the winner showed some of the accuracy and fine placements which made her SO difficult to defeat a few season’s back. C. Allen and S. Smith, a young Roslyn pair, came close to eliminating the second seeded pair, R. Sincock and R. Gray, in the Men’s Championship Doubles. Playing spectacular tennis Allen and Smith captured the first set easily at 6—l and lost the second only at 10—8. The championships will be continued to-day, and on Monday and Tuesday.
