OBITUARY
MR R. W.'McVILLY PA WELLINGTON, 6. The death has occurred in Wellington of Mr R. W. McVilly, aged 88 a former general manager of the New Zealand Railways Department. Born in Otago in 1861, Mr McVilly was educated in Dunedin and Invercargill before he joined the Railways Department in 1879. He rose to the position of general manager in 1919, and retired. in 1924. He was made a Member of the Victorian Order in 1920. Since his retirement, Mr McVilly has been the managing director of Black and White Cabs. He was a member of the Wellington City Council from 1927 to 1929. A keen sportsman, Mr McVilly was actively associated with many outdoor sporting bodies. He was president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association for 15 years, and was a member of the council for many years. He presented the McVilly Shield to be competed for annually, with a view to advancing the interests of clubs in the Wellington district. Boxing also claimed Mr McVilly’s time, and he was a member of the New Zealand and Wellington Boxing Associations. He was a founder of the Dunedin Boating Club, and represented the province on the New Zealand Rowing-Association for several years, some of the time as chairman.
