MAIDEN VOYAGE

CUMBERLAND DUE THIS MORNING LARGE CARGO SHIP The Cumberland, a new 11.280-ton cargo ship of the Federal Line, will arrive at Port Chalmers this morning from Liverpool, via northern ports. She is on her maiden voyage. A sister ship to the Norfolk and the New Zealand Shipping Company’s Haparangi, both of which have already called at this port, the Cumberland is designed for the Australian-United Kingdom trade. Like other vessels of her class, she has a fine appearance, with a raked stem, cruiser stern, short funnel, two masts and numerous Samson posts for rapid handling of cargo. A service speed of 17 knots places the Cumberland in the forefront of fast cargo ships. She has Doxford engines, which develop 12,800 British h.p. Insulated capacity in the new ship, which has an overall length of 561 ft. totals 510,000 cubic feet, and the general cargo space 250,000 feet. She was built in the Clyde yards of A. Stephen and Sons. The Cumberland’s master is Captain H. Reilly. D.S.C., R.D., R.N.V.R. While she is at Port Chalmers she will discharge a mixed cargo of 1500 tons from Liverpool and afterwards will begin loading produce for the United Kingdom.
