THE ATLANTIC PACT
Sir—Should the greatest miracle in the world’s history take place, and an aggressive America obtain the verdict over the Soviet Union in an unnecessary war, would that usher in an era of peace and progress for Britain and New Zealand? Not on your life, sir. The great capitalist elimination contest would still go on, and Britain (md America would be tearing away at one another’s throats in a very short time. The Chicago Tribune would not be the only paper to cause Mr Fraser to get hot under the collar, and Samoa is not the only Pacific island to stimulate the interest of certain influential Americans. In a tight pinch the United States would drop us like hot plates, just as she dropped Chiang-Kai-chek when he and his clique were no longer of any use to opportunist American business men. The Labour Governments of Britain and New Zealand had gobbled up the capitalist bait, and they along with other countries will not, like the Americans, have a far distant base to retire to when things get tough. Allegiance to truth is the main thing, and that underlies the fact that New Zealand lives would be nothing more than stepping stones for American monopolists in their bid for power.—l am. etc.. The Whistler.
