NO CHIMES AT PIANO RECITAL IN TOWN HALL

No chimes were sounded by the Town Hall clock during the recital given by the visiting pianist, Isadore Goodman, in the Concert Chamber last night. The chimes, the cause of complaints and criticism from previous artists and audiences who have had to endure periodic interruptions or rnarring of programmes given in the Town Hall, stopped at 7.30 p.m. It is understood that the temporary suspension of the striking and chiming mechanism of the clock is an experiment and will be continued during the second recital of the pianist on Thursday night.

The proposal to suspend the chimes during concert hall performances was discussed at the meeting of the City Council on Monday night. The matter was referred to the Finance Committee.

Last night’s audience, and no doubt the pianist, were appreciative of the uninterrupted performance which ensued as the result of the experiment.
