NATIONALISATION
FURTHER STEPS TRADE UNIONS’ PROPOSALS Special to the Daily Times WELLINGTON, Mar. 25. Further immediate steps towards the enactment of the policy of nationalisation and Socialism are proposed by the leading trade unions. Among the 83 remits for the twelfth annual conference of the New Zealand Federation of Labour; opening in Wellington on May 17, is one from the New Zealand Tramway Workers’ Union proposing that the conference lay down a policy of nationalisation of industry as the first step towards workers’ control and Socialism. The United Mine Workers’ Union proposes that the Government be asked to nationalise all coal mines. The New Zealand Engineering Workers’ Union proposes that the Government be made aware that the conference in 1944 and 1945 decided to request the responsible Ministers to socialise shipping, power and light utilities, and the coastal fishing fleet, and to control the storage and marketing of fish. The Engineering Workers’ Union also proposes that worker participation in management should be made compulsory.
