DIRECT SHIPMENT

Wellington to Oamaru

For the first time for a considerable period a coastal ship yesterday unloaded a direct shipment of cargo from Wellington to Oamaru. She was the Wainui, which arrived early yesterday morning and unloaded trucks and machinery and a small cargo of general goods. Coastal vessels do not often enter the port direct from the North Island as the amount of cargo does not usually warrant a special call The customary procedure is for goods to be transhipped on a vessel scheduled for Dunedin and unloaded on the return trip up the coast. The Wainui sailed last night for Dunedin and after loading will return to Oamaru to load for Napier and Gisborne, via Timaru.
