New Housing Area at Eveline
Work has commenced on the 64 housing units to be erected by the State at Eveline, and at present seven houses are in the course of construction. Work has commenced on the laying of drains and it is expected that these houses will be ready for occupation in the near future. This will be a slight relief to the present housing shortage, but many more houses are required before the shortage is effectively reduced. The accompanying photograph shows four units under construction in Raglan street. In the foreground many more houses will be built. The whole area in Raglan street to the west of Pembroke street and from Raglan street to the north side of Arundel street will ultimately be built on, and already three houses in Arundel street west of the Eveline Hall are under construction. Although there are a few houses on the market in Oamaru for exchange it is practically impossible to purchase one, and people coming to the borough to live have to wait many months before they have a chance of securing a home. It is also practically impossible to secure flats, and there are, moreovei, a numbei of permanent residents at the Motor Camp in the Gardens.
