BIG FALL RECORDED

USA COST OF LIVING INDEX Rec. 9 p.m. WASHINGTON. Mar. 24. The United States cost of living index had its biggest fall in nearly nine years in February. The index fell from 170.1 to 169 per cent, of the 1935-39 average- It was the fifth consecutive month in which the index has dropped since it reached the record of 174.5 per cent, during August and September, 1948, and is the longest consecutive decline in 10 years. The Labour Department reported that the index was now slightly below that of April, 1948, but was still .9 per cent, higher than a year ago, 27 per cent, above June, 1946, and 71 per cent, above August, 1939. The department said the drop of 2.5 per cent, in food prices was chiefly responsible for the lower overall index. Foods in February were 119.7 per cent, of the 1935-39 average and 8 per cent, below the July, 1948 record.
