ITALIAN OPERA

BROADCASTING RIGHTS Reports m a Sydney newspaper that the New Zealand Government had agreed to guarantee substantial financial backing to the Italian Opera Company now touring New Zealand have been denied by the Minister in charge of Broadcasting. Mr Jones. The principal part played by the Government, he said, was making available the National Orchestra during the tour. “Such has been the success of the company during its performances in New Zealand to date that this probably is the only assistance it will require,” said Mr Jones. “In return for the services of the orchestra the New Zealand Broadcasting Service has the right to broadcast any or all of the operas at any time and over any of its stations. This results in broadcasts not only from the four main centres, but also from Palmerston North, Napier and Invercargill.”
