MENACE TO DEMOCRACIES LORD ALEXANDER ADDRESSES STUDENTS Rec. 9.53 p.m. NEW YORK, Mar. 23. Field-marshal Lord Alexander, of Tunis, Canada’s .Governor-General, told the student body of the University of California to-day that the democracies wanted peace, but “ not peace at any price.” Lord Alexander received an honorary doctorate of laws, and delivered the Charter Day address. He said certain extremely evil and dangerous world forces would have to be resisted if the heritage of democracy was not to be lost. “We shall be unworthy of the heritage handed down to us by our forebears unless we are prepared to stand up for our ideals and if need be to fight for them,” he said. “In these shifting times of trouble and uncertainty it is some f-omfort to know that the West-
ern nations are aware of the dangers which threaten, and it is heartening that they at last are moving toward? a policy of mutual defence.” Lord Alexander said the time factor played a very important part in peace as in war. and democi’acies as opposed to totalitarians were at a certain disadvantage because decisions on big issues of policy must have popular support. “ But once that support is forthcoming, the strength of purpose behind the action to be taken is a power, the force of which no potential enemy dare ignore, or if he does he will do so at his peril."
