Godwits Preparing For Annual Migration
Special to the Daily Times NELSON, Mar. 24. Along the tidal flats of Farewell i' Spit during recent weeks many thousands of godwits have gathered before leaving on their annual migratory flight to the breeding grounds around r Siberia. Towards the end of last week the flocks were observed to be becoming restless, and an inspection yesterday showed that their numbers had fallen considerably. Throughout the winter months the birds which are unable to make the Sight north through old age or injury remain on the feeding grounds along the spit. The main body of godwits arrives back in New Zealand in small companies in October and November, and departs again in large flocks comprising many thousands in March and April.
