OLYMPIC CHAMPION’S VISIT

The opportunity of seeing a 1948 Olympic Games winner (a man whose spectacular diving thrilled the spectators in the North Island) will be afforded the public of Dunedin at the Municipal Baths on Friday and Saturday evenings of next week, when Dr Sammy Lee, the Olympic high-tower diving champion, will appear with Johnnie McCormack, the 22-year-old United States junior champion. What amazed those who watched Lee’s exhibitions on the springboard in the north—he was also third in the Olympic Springboard Championship—was the amazing lift he got from the board. He is only sft 2in tall, but is a picture of symmetry and grace, and is recognised as one of the greatest divers his country has ever produced. Lee believes that McCormack will be his successor in the high-tower event at the 1952 Olympic Games, to be held in Helsinki (Finland). The American champions will be supported by Otago and New Zealand champion swimmers in invitation events, and a burlesque will be provided by the University Club’s troupe.
