EARLY CHALLENGE
THE RANFURLY SHIELD SOUTHLAND’S INTENTIONS Special Correspondent INVERCARGILL, Mar. 24. Any doubt about Southland lodging a challenge for the Ranfurly Shield this season has been set at rest by the president of the Southland Rugby Union, Mr D. F. Leckie. Discussing the season’s programme at the annual meeting of the union, Mr Leckie said that Southland would have “another crack” at the shield, and doubtless because of Southland’s neighbourly aspect, it would be an early challenge. He was not deterred by the reports that there were several challenges in ahead of Southland. The arrangement of all representative games, including Ranfurly Shield challenges, was made at the annual meeting of the New Zealand union in Wellington, he said. “But no union should get the idea that Otago, with most of its team in South Africa, is going to be easy to beat for the shield,” he declared. “ Otago was fortunate last year in the wealth of extra material it had at its disposal. There will be plenty of up-and-coming material to select from this season. What we will have to do is to beat the coaching team of Cavanagh and Saxton first, but Southland will be a challenger,” he added.
