USA AIR FORCE STRENGTH HOUSE OVER-RIDES TRUMAN’S RECOMMENDATIONS Rec. 9.28 p.m. WASHINGTON, Mar. 23. The House of Representatives to-day over-rode President Truman’s Budget recommendations and overwhelnaingly approved a Bill authorising the building up of a 70-group air force. The House also approved the existing manpower ceilings of the air force and the army. The army now has a ceiling of 837,000 officers and men, while the air force has a ceiling of 502,000. Mr Truman recommended only a 48group air force and an army of 677,000, He does not oppose a larger air force or higher man-power ceilings, but he feels the country cannot afford them this year. The Bill now goes to the Senate, where it is expected to get a favourable reception.
