SUCCESS OF VARSITY SWIMMERS
The University Swimming Club is at present enjoying a run of considerable success. It has won the Swimming Shield at the Easter Inter-var-sity Tournament for several years past and is also the holder of the Ellis Shield for water polo in the same tournament'last year, and there is every possibility that this winning vein will be continued. This season membership has increased, and a large and keen group of University men and women meet on club nights. The new School of Physical Education gives active support. The championship carnival scheduled for to-morrow night promises many interesting features. Especially prominent among the events will be the meetings of W. J. Jarvis and T. H. Logan. Jarvis is as keen as ever and although without the edge 9f speed that distinguished him in his heyday as a sprint freestyle swimmer, has turned to other strokes with marked success. His performance in winning four titles at the Otago championships freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and medley—was outstanding. It was unfortunate that injury prevented him from contesting the New Zealand championships. There, Logan shone, winning the medley title in record time and the 100 Yards Butterfly Championship. In winning the Taranaki championships earlier, Logan put up new centre records of 57 3-ssec for the 100 Yards Freestyle and 73sec for 100 Yards Breaststroke, the best times produced in senior championship competition in New Zealand this season. Miss Betty Moore, the New Zealand women’s diving champion, will be a competitor in the university divjng championship, and record breaking attempts will be made by Miss Jean Stewart, the brilliant young backstroke swimmer, and bv John Jarvis, the remarkably promising 13-year-old swimmer. A water polo match will be played between an Otago team and the University team.
