BALKIS WINS CUP
SPORTING
First Day of Oamaru Club’s Autumn Meeting
FINAL EVENT TO VITAMIN
The Oamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was opened yesterday in fine but cold weather, and there was a fair attendance. The track Avas in splendid order and good times were recorded. Tuatea was made each way favourite for the Cup, and after being prominent throughout the running finished second. Both Tuatea and Bren Gun swung out at the bottom of the straight, and the winner, Balkis, got a great run through on the rails. Arctotis was made second favourite but never look likely. He was well back early in the running, and although he moved up between the six and the five, he did not come on as expected. Large fields went to the post for the two trotting events, each of which had to be run in divisions. The totalisator handled £27,516, compared with £21.008 10s on the corresponding day last year.
